Ding dong. At the door is the delivery man with a package from Chapters Indigo for me. In it is a small, white box about the size of an average hardcover book. Nestled inside is my new smoky sleek Kobo.
I keep wondering if e-readers are for me. The feel of cracking a book is my “happy place.” The high costs of iPads and Kindles made the waiting decision for me. Then Kobo arrived on the market and at my door.
As an avid reader and book reviewer, I read on average 4-5 books per month. My limited bookshelves are bursting with books waiting for me to read or books I will or not read again. Yes, there is a definite environmentally-friendly reason to get an e-reader.
I immediately load and charge it so it would be ready to go. After dinner, I slip into the bathroom to have a bubble bath and read. I quickly realize, “Hmm…I should not have this near water.” I grab a magazine to entertain me.
When I tried to use it, my toddler wanted to see my ‘new toy.’ So after my children went to sleep I sank into the couch with my feet up and clicking on the book I begin. It is like reading a computer screen but with bigger fonts.
The next morning I pack the diaper bag for my day out with the girls. At the last minute I slide in my Kobo. Sure enough after the day at the park, both kids enjoy a cat nap in the car on the way home. I am bored until I remember I have the Kobo. I am so involved I jump when I hear “Mommy, can I read that?” coming from my toddler.
The library available is limited compared to your local book store. And for your personal bath time, you will need to leave the e-reader on the nightstand. Plus my friends will not be able to steal or borrow from my shelves.
I love the travel convenience of the slim Kobo but I still love the intoxication of holding a fresh book waiting to be read.
