Penny for Your Thoughts (TTC)
February 8, 2010 - 12:51pm — byGary Webster, General Manager of the TTC, sent a memo out to staff over the weekend, basically issuing an ultimatum for employees to start adhering to the standards in place. Webster wrote of his getting “increasingly tired of defending the reputation of the TTC.” He also spoke to his exasperation over constantly having to explain “what is acceptable and what is not.”
Not long after the memo was issued, many TTC employees – without the approval or backing of the ATU – began a Facebook group called “Toronto Transit Operators against public harassment.” The hopes of this group was to initiate dialogue amongst employees to figure out how to combat the negative views that have resulted in the past months thanks to the viral nature of riders’ posts on social media outlets such as Twitter, Facebook, and Youtube.
Speculation grew on Sunday about the possibility of the workers initiating a Work-To-Rule treatment of their respective positions. As of lunchtime Monday, no reports of such job treatments had been made, however riders are still anxious as to the possibility of such a backlash and what it will mean for TTC services.
We at the Women’s Post want to know what you think. Are TTC workers entitled to feeling “harassed” over the ridership’s collective scrutiny? Or is this part and parcel with their job, and if they didn’t want the negative press they should have been providing the service that Torontonians deserve? Are they entitled to feeling slighted when all that Torontonians are expecting is that they do their job?
Let us know your thoughts. Comment below and open up the dialogue. Let the people be heard!

There are some awesome TTC
There are some awesome TTC staff out there - and then there are the people who clearly hate their jobs and should quit but don't have the motivation to do so.
That's pretty much the case with any industry/sector: unhappy front-line employees put a bad face on your business. Get rid of them, whatever the cost.
As business people we should all be paying attention to that vital lesson.

TTC workers are people, just
TTC workers are people, just like everyone else, and anyone being harassed in their place of work is simply unacceptable. Torontonians do expect to be provided with exceptional service when it comes to the TTC, but it needs to be understood that the same respect and courtesy runs two ways. As always, you need to give a little to get a little.
