I am not a tetrachromat. No man is. The ability to detect four distinct ranges of colour which allows these lucky people to see 100 times the number of colours others see is unique to those with a double helping of the X chromosome. Even among women, this ability is rare. But for those women who are not gifted with this mutation, do not despair. You still see colours differently, indeed better, than men do, especially in the red spectrum. This confirms what many of us have thought all along: ...

Paul Gross is the current media darling, courtesy of his much-anticipated Passchendaele, on now at TIFF. But back in 2002, Women's Post contributer Diane Baker Mason saw the attention coming: She met the new legend and called him "talented, creatively prolific, [and] disarmingly nice." No word on whether she ever met his dog. Published: March 2002 By Diane Baker Mason There’s a question I’ve been asked a lot lately. Not a deep one, such as “What is the meaning...

Once upon a time, a man and a woman, favoured above all else, lived in Paradise. Until, of course, human nature got the better of them. Yet if it weren’t for a snake, an apple, or — ahem — a woman, Ric Esther Bienstock wouldn’t be the award-winning documentary producer and director she is today. As Ric sees it, “I think this world is full of horrible and beautiful and crazy things most of us are curious about. There’s always satisfaction in bringing a tragic or ‘importantâ...

It was Friday night and I had been anxiously anticipating the movie premiere of The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian all week. Nothing, not even the adamant refusals of my fellow movie-goer would deter me from this opening. I assured him that he had nothing to lose, considering that I planned to treat him. He, in turn, assured me that if ‘treat’ was synonymous with ‘torture’ he did have something to lose – over two hours of his time well spent doing something more worthwhi...

I had not seen Daniel Stern in a movie since he was last put through a number of challenges that would likely kill an average human being in Home Alone 2. The dopey, neglectful husband he plays in Buccaneer Films' A Previous Engagement – to be released this Friday, May 9 - at first seems to share the singular intensity of bungled burglar Marv. The film's protagonist is Julia Reynolds (played by Juliet Stevenson), a housekeeper of a mother in an stagnant relationship with her ...

It has just, briefly, hailed. While this does not have the same symbolic resonance as the first snow, its abruptness rather dramatically underscores the more subtle seasonal changes: the reddening leaves, sharp air, diminishing hours of daylight. These hallmarks accompany, or prompt, an internal shift – an inclination towards deeper introspection, and a readiness for more intense intellectual activity than is felt in the warmer months. This mood swing is mirrored on bookshelves and in theatres...

A Mighty Heart Directed by Michael Winterbottom ***1/2 A Mighty Heart is a docudrama about the 2002 kidnapping and beheading, in Pakistan, of Wall Street Journal correspondent Daniel Pearl, a story that shocked and riveted the world. The film is based on the book of the same name written by Pearl's widow Mariane, who was five months pregnant at the time of his abduction. Director Michael Winterbottom (The Road to Guantanamo) uses reenactments along with occasional bits of ...

Knocked up Directed by Judd Apatow ** 1/2 It's summer and those not into comic book heroes or lame teen comedies can find the movie pickings slim. There are, however, a few offerings out there which are purportedly for older and possibly wiser folk. One of these, Knocked Up, was written and directed by the fellow who brought the world The 40 Year Old Virgin. In this movie, Alison, a beautiful blonde 20-something who has just received a grand promotion, ha...

Alpha Dog Directed by Nick Cassavetes *** Alpha Dog is a teen flick with a brutal twist. It suggests that the violent fantasies of gangsta rap coupled with indifferent parenting and the lure of easy money form a toxic mix which leads young men to create a Lord of the Flies-like culture. The kids in Alpha Dog are not minorities from poor neighbourhoods. They are white children of suburbia, used to large pleasant homes with sparkling swimming pool...
