5 hair trends you need to leave behind in 2017

We’ve talked about beauty, fashion, and food that have all become a hot mess in 2017. This week we are going to close off the trends series by talking about some wacky hairstyles I’ve seen this year. Here are five hair trends you need to leave behind in 2017:

Unicorn Hair

This one should not come as a surprise! We are living in a culture that seemingly obsessed with a mythical and magical creature. Unicorn hair, or hair in layered pastel colours, is not uncommon to find, especially during the summer of 2017. There were lots of millennial pink heads out there in addition to the rainbow hair styles.

Silver Hair

At one point silver hair on a younger person became all the rage and it’s still present in 2017. Maybe in 2018, we should try not chemically stripping our hair for the sake of fashion and embracing our natural hair. Colourful styles can we fun, but by all means get highlights and stop layering in bleach and dye.

Chunky Highlights

Speaking of highlights, back in October of this year, a hairstylist from New Jersey posted a few pictures of her clients wearing this 90’s trend in 2017. It was well liked and many started to consider bringing back chunky look. Think Kelly Clarkson peak 2003 the Thankful album cover. While we have seen some embarrassing styles in the 90’s (I’m not afraid to admit I was once a lover of chunky highlights too), I think people should return to the preferable the thin, blended or ombre effect for 2018.

Half Shaved Head

It’s the classic ‘badass’ look. Having one side of your head buzzed and the other with a flip of luxurious hair. This look has been popularized in the pop music industry by people like Cassie and Rihanna. It also made its way to Hollywood. However, shaving half or even a bit of your head is a big commitment. If you really want this style you have to stick to it and maintain it, or deal with having uneven hair for a very long time afterwards if the look doesn’t please you.

Excessively Long Extensions

Long hair can be a lot of work, but it sure looks great.  However, if you’re a lover of wearing hair extensions, the excessively overdone look can be bit much. Celebrities like Kim and Kylie Kardashian have been known to switch up their looks ever so often using this trick, but half the time they are using some really good quality wigs. Earlier this year, Kim was known to switch up her looks from blonde to short to extreme 32 inch extensions. It was her “Cher’-inspired beauty look. This Rapunzel type look has been a favourite of celebrities to express drama and luxury — but that doesn’t mean it works for the regular everyday person.

Here is hoping you can leave all the excess baggage and negativity in your life behind for 2017 and focus on better things to come for the New Year!

Try these holiday inspired beauty and fashion looks

Christmas and New Year festivities are real opportunities to dress with a slight touch of elegance. Think glitter, shimmer and shine. It’s the one time it’s acceptable to look like you stepped off the set of a glamorous Hollywood movie instead of rolling out of bed, throwing on a pair of jeans and a sweater. Here are some holiday inspired beauty and fashion looks

Headbands with style

A simple and put together look can be completed with a perfect headband. During the holidays, it’s fine to add a bit of shimmer and bling to your accessories. Every queen needs her crown, right ? Try a tiara-inspired headband to pull your holiday look together.

Red Lips

Thanks to Fenty Beauty and Rihanna’s newly released Lip Stunna, lip paint in Uncensored, red lips will be plentiful this holiday seaosn . I love a classic red lip and Rihanna’s universal red works for every skin tone. Red, after all, is the colour of love and celebration.

Glitter eyeliner/ eyes

The glitter eye look will be popular this holiday season. Fenty Beauty’s Galaxy Holiday Collection presented products like glitter eyeliner and a glitter eyeshadow palette. Put your creativity to use and explore different festive eye looks, think gold, silver, green, copper, and even burgundy. A smoky eye with some glitter eyeliner also works. These looks will certainly match your sparkly dress.

Glossy Lips

If you don’t want to be over the top with heavy eye makeup and red lips, there is the choice to keep it minimal on your lips with a simple gloss look while you play up the eye makeup. It’s a more neutral look, but you will sill look polished.

Glitter clutch

If you will be pulling out that little black dress for the holiday party, you need some bold and bright accessories! Consider adding the glitter and glow to your choice to party clutch or shoes. The perfect glitter and holiday-inspired accessories will help your look come together. Just remember to go classy rather than trashy. Too many bobbles your hair will ruin the work you put into your dress and makeup.

Some of the best celebrity Halloween costumes over the years

When you’re looking for Halloween inspiration and neat costumes ideas, sometimes it’s best to turn to our favourite celebrities and celebrity couples. They tend to go all-out at their Halloween bashes, and Women’s Post has a round up of some of the best costumes posted on social media.

2016: Beyonce, Jay Z and Blue Ivy as Barbie dolls.

This family really put in the work in 2016. The couple appeared as black Barbie and Ken, even in the classic Barbie boxes and perfect doll-like poses.

2016: Kylie Jenner as Christina Aguilera ( Dirrrrrty)

The Kardashian-Jenner clan often make the news around Halloween for their over the top costumes, but Kylie Jenner as old-school Christina Aguilera from the ‘Dirrty’ music video was everything.

2015: Heidi Klum as Jessica Rabbit

Klum may as well be crowned as the queen of Halloween because her transformations get more stunning each year. Jessica Rabbit never looked so life like.

2014: Kim Kardashian as  Princess Jasmine (again)

This was probably one of the sweetest costume reboots. In 2009 Kim Kardashian-West appeared as Jasmine from the popular disney movie Aladdin and in 2016 she was joined by her daughter North, as a mini Jasmine and her son Saint was baby Aladdin.

2016: Heidi Klum as herself and herself and… herself and… wait what?

Heidi Klum cloned herself (not actually) to attend her own epic Halloween bash in 2016. Five Heidis appeared for photo ops and it was honestly hard to spot the real Heidi right away. To bring her clones to life, it reportedly carried a hefty price tag, as the similar models had facial enhancements to look like Klum and one bodysuit cost approximately $1490.

2012: Emma Roberts as Vivian Ward (Pretty Woman)

This costume doesn’t work for everyone, but Vivian Ward was the most iconic character portrayed in the 1990 hit, Pretty Woman. The iconic role was played by Julia Roberts. Emma Roberts is her niece so that’s why this one makes us say— this is kinda cool!

2014: Katy Perry as a Flamin’ Hot Cheeto

It’s simple, yet fun and sad. Perry was know for her sweeter image back in 2014 but when she attended Kate Hudson’s Halloween bash, she appeared as a lonely, sad Flamin’Hot Cheeto. Perry was definitely missing her other Flamin’ friends as she later went home to post on her Instagram a lip-sync to All by Myself.

2011: Kelly Ripa and Nick Lachey as Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries

Back in 2011, Kelly Ripa hosted Live with Regis and Kelly with guest co-host Nick Lachey. The pair presented themselves as newlyweds Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries. The costume was an ironic hit because just hours later, Kardashian filed for divorce just after 72 days of marriage, and a $10 million televised wedding.

2016: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau- The Little Prince

Prime Minister Trudeau had his own little prince as he dressed up in 2016 with his son for Halloween. The pair recreated the look from the classic Le petit Prince by French writer, Antoine de Saint-Exupery. Trudeau captioned the image, “A pilot and his little prince.” Can we all collectively awww!

Beauty Minute: Rihanna’s Fenty Makeup Line

The beauty world was buzzing this weekend as Rihanna released her widely anticipated Fenty Beauty Line.

Fenty Beauty uses the tag line “Beauty For All” and this is exactly the aim the pop star sensation tried to get across to the public. Fenty Beauty wants to include women of all shades, cultures, personalities and races — a makeup line where no one is left out. The Pro Filt’r foundation comes in 40 available shades, ranging from light to deep.

Rihanna has managed to add diverse options that long-standing beauty brands neglected to include. This wider range of colour options for various skin tones is fuelling the sales of Fenty Beauty and adds some much needed change to the beauty counter. Fenty Beauty is available online or at various Sephora locations worldwide.

5 tips to dress for a sweltering hot day

Dressing for hot weather can seem impossible — running makeup, frizzy hair, sore feet, and of course, all of the clothing clings that to your body. It’s gross and can really ruin your day.

But, Women’s Post is here to tell you that it’s NOT impossible to dress to impress in the summer heat. In fact, the key is embracing your natural beauty and having a bit of fun with your summer choices.

Here are our top five tips to dress for a scorching summer day:

Natural makeup: I don’t know about you, but in extreme warm weather, the mere thought of foundation, eyeshadow, and lipstick makes me cringe. All I can picture is my face melting off as I’m walking outside with friends. It’s not even worth it. Instead, go for a more natural look. Stick to a bit of cover up if you have dark circles under your eyes and a bit of mascara. If you really want to go crazy, add some eyeliner on your top lids. Lipstick (or preferably a light coloured gloss) should be fine — just make sure you do a teeth check with a friend after that first glass of wine.

Updos: Do you ever feel like the simplest thing to do in the summer is to chop off all your hair? While short hair looks good on some people, others may want to keep their long locks despite the frizzy mess the humidity creates. In those cases, the easiest thing you can do with your hair is to put it up. Whether it’s a lazy bun or a braid, just get it off your face. Sure, curling your hair or straightening it may look professional and sexy, but once the humidity or head sweat attacks, those luscious curls will turn into a crimped monstrosity.

The best part is that updos can be equally fun. My biggest piece of advice is not to pull your hair back into a really tight ponytail or bun, as it may give you a headache throughout the day. Instead, put your hair up as you normally would and then tug at the ends to create volume. Add a headband if you want some texture. Let a few pieces hang down around your ears. If it’s not perfect, that’s okay! Perfection in an updo is overrated. Play around with braids and hair twists until you find something that works for everyday wear. If putting all your hair up is simply too horrifying to imagine, try the half bun. This hairstyle is very trendy this year and still allows you to get your sticky hair off your face while having the rest of your hair down.

Wear comfortable and loose clothing: Ditch the spanx and wear what’s comfortable. No one needs extra layers on when the humidity hits. Luckily, the trend this year is to embrace the baggy and bohemian — lots of colours and patterns. Tops are flowy with peek-a-boo shoulders and can be paired with shorts or a comfortable skirt. Try to find dresses that flatter your natural body shape. The trend this year is to have a dress with sleeves, which is perfect to protect your shoulders from the harsh UV rays of the sun. Dress these outfits up with a pair of cute laced sandles and a hat or dress it down with a pair of converse or walking shoes (see below).

The biggest tip: stay away from black (however slimming). This summer, embrace light colours and breezy materials. You won’t regret it.

Walking sandals: What used to be old and clunky has been reborn. They come in multiple styles and colours, including ones with laces and funky straps. I recently bought a pair of walking sandals that I love, and received a compliment at work about how they looked. The plus side? They were incredibly comfortable. Most walking sandals have cushioning and an incredible amount of support around the ankle — perfect to avoid those nasty falls. No blisters for me this summer! With all of these new styles, walking sandals can be worn to work or a night out on the town.

Hit the beach proud: Worried your body may not be “beach ready”? Screw that! If you have a body, and you go to the beach, it is beach ready! When I went to Mexico on vacation, I was really worried that I would look terrible in a bikini. But, when I got there, it was so hot that I decided to ignore what everyone else thought and I rocked the two-piece. I was able to survive the excruciating hot week thanks to that decision. The best part? I wasn’t the only one. Everyone on that beach, no matter their size, was wearing a bikini. Some were even going topless! If it’s a hot day, wear as little clothes as is legally allowed and be proud of your amazing body.

Morning makeup routine for moms on the go

Between errands and the kids, life can get a bit hectic— but your makeup routine shouldn’t have to be. Whether you’re stuck with morning eye circles or a pale complexion, you can learn a simple beauty-boosting routine which takes less than 10 minutes. So, even if time isn’t on your side, you can still feel fresh-faced and confident before heading out the door. Want to know the secret?   Here’s a quick and easy morning makeup routine for moms on the go.

Fake Awake

First thing in the morning, we’re often groggy and grumpy—boo! In order to melt away the morning blues, there are great ways to perk up your complexion and get the juices flowing. If you’re a mom on a budget, you can try some DIY methods to boost the colour in your cheeks. First, you can apply caffeinated tea bags to the under eye area, which stimulates blood flow to brighten dark circles. Wakey, wakey!

Another fantastic trick is to mix cinnamon and honey together and apply it to dark circles. The cinnamon contains powerful antioxidants, which promote healthy skin and fight against wrinkles. The honey acts as a natural moisturizer. When combined, these ingredients form the ultimate perk-up potion. You’re welcome.

Face Primer Before Foundation

These days, applying makeup without a primer is like leaving your house without a bra. Without it, you just don’t have the same boom-factor. Currently, primers stand as one of the hottest beauty must-haves in the industry, so of course, there are dozens of different versions available on the market. When choosing the best ones, it’s best to look for two factors: wrinkle-smoothing and softening. This means you’re looking for a product that will reduce the appearance of lines, while also prepping your skin for a smooth makeup application.

You can create a sensational DIY primer by blending a tiny drop of Rosehip oil into water and massaging the mixture onto your face. The effects are lovely, working to soften fine lines and hydrate your skin. Once you’ve applied your primer, you can layer on makeup more seamlessly.

BB Cream over Powder

Powder is quickly becoming an age-old artifact — something to forget along with other fazed-out trends like jelly sandals and poodle perms. Goodbye to you all and thank goodness. Right now, it’s all about dewy, healthy-looking makeup. Since powder is quite drying and cakey, it lacks that flawless finish that can be found with today’s leading beauty balms.   What is beauty balm, you ask? Known as BB cream, it acts as a high-coverage moisturizer that also smooths out fine lines and hydrates the skin. Most mainstream cosmetic companies are replacing their powders with BB creams, catering to the huge demand for this effortless light-weight coverage. It’s an absolute godsend because it provides that beautiful high-maintenance look without all the fuss and time—perfect for busy yummy mummies.

Finish with Blush and Mascara

The last steps are relatively quick and simple. Once you’ve applied your bb cream, you can dust on some blush to the apples of your cheeks to pump-up your complexion. Blush is important because it’s often the difference between looking like a pale zombie and a living, breathing human. So, don’t underestimate the life-infusing powers of blush— it’s CPR for your complexion.

Finally, add a couple coats of mascara to your lashes to open up your eyes. Ideally, you’ll want to use a mascara that specializes in creating a lengthening effect. Not only will your eyes look brighter and more attractive, you’ll actually look younger as well.

With this quick and easy morning makeup routine, every mom can easily get her groove on and hustle out the door. Ultimately, we all deserve to feel happy and healthy-looking — so use this regimen to get that extra boost of confidence to take you through the day!

WATCH: Do Guys Prefer Makeup or No Makeup?

When guys tell us they prefer the ”no makeup” or ”au naturel” look, do they really mean it? One of Youtube’s many Makeup Gurus, maicangirl, had to know.

The results? Yeah, they lied.

Fear not, ladies! It’s not like we put makeup on for men anyways, right? But seeing as you’re on Tinder to meet someone, it may be a good idea to go for the guys that choose you for your unedited pictures… just a thought to consider.

Good luck!
